Open questions first, in the students’ own words, then two quick ratings. Change any question to fit your course.

The lessons and the program

  1. What do you like most about our English lessons?

    Open answer

Why ask it. Tells you what to keep when you change the program.

  2. What would you like to study in more depth in class?

    Open answer Required

Why ask it. Topics students feel unsure about, such as tenses, pronunciation or speaking. Plan the next lessons around the ones that repeat.

  3. What would you like to see added to the learning program?

    Open answer Required

Why ask it. Requests for new material, such as exam prep or conversation practice, that can shape your next course.

The group and progress

  1. What do you think about the atmosphere and communication in the group?

    Open answer Required

Why ask it. In a language class people learn by speaking. If students feel awkward in the group, this is where they say so.

  2. Have your English skills improved since you started attending the classes?

    Scale 1–5 Required 1 – Not at all, 5 – Definitely

Why ask it. How students rate their own progress. Compare it from one course to the next.

  3. How would you rate your teacher?

    Rating 1–5 Required

Why ask it. One score for the teacher. In a school with several teachers, add a question asking which teacher the student has.

Ideas

  1. Any suggestions, remarks, or ideas for improving the learning process? ;)

    Open answer Required

Why ask it. Anything the other questions missed, from homework to class times. Consider making it optional.

How to read English class feedback.

Progress and the teacher

The 1–5 progress scale and the star rating are the two numbers to compare from one course to the next.

Themes in the open answers

Export the five open answers and tag them: grammar, speaking, vocabulary, materials, pace. The tags that repeat set the plan for the next module.

The group

Answers about the atmosphere show whether everyone gets to speak. A few comments about shyness are enough reason to change how you run pair work.

How to get honest answers from students.

  1. Make it anonymous

The template asks for no name. Turn on anonymous mode in the survey settings and tell students so before they start.

  2. Give it class time

Leave five minutes at the end of a lesson. Students answer before they leave the room.

  3. Ask mid-course

Halfway through, you can still change the program for the same group.

  4. Show what changed

Start the next lesson with one thing you are changing because of their answers.

Questions about this template

What questions should an English class feedback survey ask?

What students like about the lessons, what they want to study in more depth, what to add to the program, how the group feels, whether their English has improved and how they rate the teacher. This template asks all of it in seven questions.

Can I use it as a feedback form for spoken English classes?

Yes. The questions fit any English course. For a speaking course, add questions on how confident students feel speaking and whether they get enough speaking time.

Is the survey anonymous?

The template asks for no name or e-mail. Turn on anonymous mode in the survey settings (every plan, including Free) and the results also hide each student’s IP address, country, browser and device.

Can I compare teachers or groups?

Add a question for the teacher or the group. Then filter the results by it on Basic and higher plans, or export the answers and compare them in Excel.

How long does it take to answer?

About five minutes, most of it typing. Four of the open questions are required; make some of them optional if students answer on a phone between classes.

Ask your students before the next module.

Put in your teachers or groups and show the QR code at the end of class.
