The 10 HOA survey questions in this template.

Grouped the way residents meet them. Each one is there for a reason, and you can change any of them.

About the resident

  1. In what region do you live?

    Open answer Required

Why ask it. For a management company that runs several communities, it keeps every answer tied to its place.

  2. In what city or town do you live?

    Open answer Required

Why ask it. Together with the region, it lets you compare communities in one report. A single HOA can delete both questions.

  3. How long have you lived in this community?

    Single choice Required

    • Less than 1 year
    • 1–2 years
    • 3–5 years
    • 6–10 years
    • More than 10 years

Why ask it. Newcomers and long-time owners often want different things. This is the question you filter by later.

The board’s proposals

  1. How much do you support or oppose the recent changes suggested by the Homeowners’ Association?

    Single choice Required

    • Strongly support
    • Somewhat support
    • Neither support nor oppose
    • Somewhat oppose
    • Strongly oppose

Why ask it. A five-point scale shows how strong the support is.

  2. Following on from the previous question, why do you feel that way?

    Open answer

Why ask it. The reasons behind the vote. This is where the board finds the objection it can still answer.

Satisfaction with the association

  1. Overall, how satisfied are you with how the Homeowners’ Association works?

Rating 1–10 Required 1 – Not satisfied at all, 10 – Very satisfied

Why ask it. One number to track from year to year and to report at the annual meeting.

  2. For each category, please rate your overall experience:

    Matrix 1 – Poor, 5 – Excellent

    • Communication
    • Planning
    • Budgeting
    • Knowledge
    • Responsiveness

    Scale: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Why ask it. Five parts of the board’s work on one screen. The weakest one stands out.

  3. Select the items you think are positive about the Homeowners’ Association

    Multiple choice

    • Association management
    • Geographic location
    • Property maintenance services
    • Sense of community
    • Neighbors
    • Low assessments
    • Communication
    • Amenities/facilities
    • Board of directors/access

Why ask it. What residents value most. Keep it safe when you cut costs, and lead with it in the newsletter.

Ideas and profile

  1. What can be improved to serve you better?

    Open answer

Why ask it. Ideas the board did not think to ask about.

  2. Your age

    Single choice

    • 18–24
    • 25–34
    • 35–44
    • 45–54
    • 55–64
    • 65 and older

Why ask it. Shows whether the answers represent the whole community or one age group.

How to read HOA survey results.

One score to track

The 1–10 satisfaction rating gives the board a single number to compare from year to year. On Basic and higher plans, filter it by how long people have lived in the community to see whether newcomers and long-time owners agree.

Where the board loses points

The matrix puts communication, planning, budgeting, knowledge and responsiveness in one chart, with the lowest-rated area easy to spot.

The reasons behind the vote

Open answers explain the support and oppose numbers. Export everything to Excel, CSV or SPSS on any plan, or share a read-only report link with the board.

How to get more residents to answer.

  1. Say what will change

Open with one line: the answers decide the agenda of the next meeting. People answer when they see their vote counts.

  2. Meet residents where they are

A QR code by the elevator or mailboxes reaches the owners who never read e-mail.

  3. Give it a deadline

Two weeks is enough. Send one reminder halfway through.

  4. Report back

Share the three main findings and what the board will do about them. Residents see their answers were used.

More HOA survey questions you can add.

Not in the template. Add any of them in the builder in a few clicks.

Maintenance and amenities

  • How satisfied are you with the upkeep of common areas?
  • Which amenity would you most like the association to add or improve?
  • How quickly are maintenance requests resolved?

Fees and budget

  • Do you feel the HOA fees are good value for what you receive?
  • Which projects should be funded first next year?
  • How clearly does the board explain how the budget is spent?

Rules and communication

  • Are the community rules enforced fairly?
  • How would you prefer to receive news from the association?
  • How likely are you to attend the next annual meeting?

Questions about this template

What questions should an HOA survey ask?

Cover four things: overall satisfaction with the association, how residents rate the board’s work (communication, planning, budgeting), their view of current proposals, and what they would improve. This template asks about all four in ten questions.

How many questions should an HOA survey have?

Short enough to finish on a phone. This template has ten questions. Five of them are optional, and residents can skip what does not apply to them.

When should an HOA run a survey?

Before the annual meeting, after the board proposes new fees, rules or contractors, and once a year to track satisfaction over time.

Does the survey ask for residents’ names?

No. The template asks for no name, e-mail or address. If you need exactly one answer per household, send unique links (Standard plan and higher) instead of one shared link.

How do I send it to residents?

Share the survey link in your newsletter or resident chat, or print the QR code on a notice in the lobby.

Ask your residents before the next meeting.

Name the proposals, send the link to every household and bring the answers to the meeting.
