How to Close a Published Survey
Updated
On this page
When you close a survey, its link keeps working, but respondents see a closing page instead of the questions. Responses you have already collected stay in Results, and you can reopen the survey at any time.
Closing a survey from the dashboard
This is the fastest way: the survey closes right away, you don't need to publish anything.
- On the dashboard, click ⋯ on the survey card.
- Click Unpublish survey.
- In the confirmation window, click Unpublish survey again.

The survey stops accepting new responses, and its card shows the Unpublished status. You can still view its reports and responses.
To reopen the survey, click ⋯ on the card and choose Activate survey. There is no confirmation: the survey starts accepting responses again right away.
Closing a survey in Settings
The Close survey setting is available on the Basic plan and higher.
- Open the survey and go to Settings.
- In the Publication and availability group, turn on Close survey (1). The status at the top of the group changes to Survey is not available.
- Click Publish (2).

Changes in Settings reach respondents only after you publish the survey. Until then, the survey stays open.
To reopen the survey, turn off Close survey and click Publish.
What respondents see
Anyone who opens the link of a closed survey sees a page with the heading The survey is completed and the text "We have already received the sufficient number of answers. Thank you for your attention!"

When you close the survey by hand (from the dashboard or with Close survey), you can show your own text instead (Basic and higher):
- In Settings, turn on Your message on the private survey page.
- Fill in Heading and Message.
- Click Publish.
When the survey closes on its own by Deadline or Limit on number of responses, respondents see the default text even if your own message is turned on.
While the survey is closed:
- the survey link and the survey embedded on your website show this page instead of the questions;
- links that let respondents edit a submitted response stop working;
- the pages of the Share section, except Link, show the banner The survey is disabled and not collecting responses.
Other ways to stop collecting responses
If you don't want to close the survey by hand, set it to close on its own. All these options are in Settings → Publication and availability:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Deadline | Closes the survey at the date and time you set (Standard and higher). |
| Limit on number of responses | Closes the survey once it collects the number of responses you set (Standard and higher). |
| Scheduled access | Opens and closes the survey on the days and hours you choose. Outside these hours respondents see when the survey is open (Basic and higher). |
Like Close survey, these settings start working after you click Publish. More details are in Response Limit and Survey Deadline.
If you no longer need the survey on the dashboard, move it to the archive: an archived survey is not available to respondents either. See Survey Archive.
If something doesn't work
- Unpublish survey is inactive in the card menu. The survey has never been published, so there is nothing to close yet.
- The survey still accepts responses after you turned on Close survey. Changes in Settings reach respondents only after you click Publish.
- The survey is still closed after you clicked Enable on the banner in Share. Enable changes only the draft of the survey. Open the survey and click Publish.
- Respondents see the default text instead of your message. Your message is shown only when the survey is closed by hand. After a deadline or a response limit, the page shows the default text.
- The survey closed by itself. Check Deadline, Limit on number of responses and Scheduled access in Settings → Publication and availability.
