How the average rating is calculated
Formula
Rating = (1 × ratings of 1 + 2 × ratings of 2 + … + 5 × ratings of 5) / all ratings.
Rating
The average is convenient for a storefront and for trends, but read it together with the number of reviews.
Share of 4–5
Shows how many customers are clearly satisfied. A close relative of the CSAT top-2.
Low ratings
The share of 1–2 stars quickly shows the risk of returns, complaints and negative reviews.
Calculation examples

What to avoid
- Ignoring the number of reviews 4.8 from 10 reviews and 4.5 from 2,000 reviews support very different conclusions.
- Comparing different touchpoints A delivery rating and a product rating answer different questions. Keep the sources apart.
- Skipping the comments The number shows the scale of a problem; the reason usually sits in the comments.
