How a Likert scale is calculated
Formula
Average score = sum(score × number of answers) / all answers. Top-2 box = (answers 4 + 5) / all answers × 100%.
Average score
Shows the overall level but smooths over polarization: two groups with different distributions can have the same average.
Top-2 box
The share of 4s and 5s. Easy to explain in a management report: how many people rather agree.
Negative answers
The share of 1s and 2s. Track it separately so that problem segments do not disappear behind the average.

What to avoid
- Looking only at the average The average hides polarization. Always check the top box, the bottom box and the full distribution.
- Comparing different wordings If the question changed between waves, comparing averages becomes much weaker.
- Mixing scales Do not combine 1–5, 1–7 and 0–10 answers without normalizing them and explaining the method.
