Score normalization calculator

Convert a score from its original scale to a new one, for example 1–5 to 0–100 or 0–10 to 1–5. Useful for putting different metrics into one report.

Normalization — a linear conversion of a value from one range to another that keeps its relative position within the scale.

How normalization is calculated

Formula

Normalized = newMin + (value − oldMin) × (newMax − newMin) / (oldMax − oldMin).

Linear conversion

The position within the scale is kept: the middle of the old scale becomes the middle of the new one.

One reporting scale

Normalization lets you show different metrics in one range, such as 0–100.

Limits

The method does not make different questions mean the same thing; it only aligns their scale.

Calculation examples

1 CSAT 1–5 to a 0–100 scale

Value: 4.2
Old scale: 1–5
New scale: 0–100
4.2 becomes 80 points out of 100.

2 A 0–10 rating to a 1–5 scale

Value: 8
Old scale: 0–10
New scale: 1–5
The new score is 4.2 out of 5.

What to avoid

  1. Normalizing different meanings A 0–100 range does not turn NPS and CSAT into one metric. Always label where a number comes from.
  2. Going outside the range If the original value is below the minimum or above the maximum, check the input and the scale.
  3. Hiding the original scale Keep the conversion method in the report so the number does not suggest false precision.
