Welcome screen
May 31, 2026 Reading time ≈ 5 min
A respondent opens a survey - the first screen with text, goals, and time. They finish - the final screen "Thank you for participating". These are the welcome screen and the thank you screen. Not questions, but framing: they set expectations and close the session. In SurveyNinja both are configured in the builder - text, design, transition to the next screen. Short and to the point - below.
A welcome screen lowers drop-off at the start, a thank you screen wraps up without a feeling of being cut off. Both shape the impression and the response rate. You can skip them, but you lose context for the respondent.
Welcome screen - the first contact
Welcome Screen - the first survey screen before the questions. It shows text: the survey's goal, the estimated time, instructions, and conditions (anonymity, consent to data processing). The respondent understands what they're getting into and decides whether to start or not. It contains no questions. It may include a "Start" button or an automatic transition to the first question. In SurveyNinja it is set up as a separate screen in the builder, with the option to add a logo and style the text.
In short: "what this is, how long it takes, click start".
What to put on the welcome screen
Goal. One or two phrases: "A survey to assess service quality" or "We're researching the preferences of restaurant X's customers". No fluff - the respondent should grasp the topic in 3 seconds.
Time. "Takes 3-5 minutes" or "about 10 questions". An honest estimate reduces early exits - people plan how much they'll spend.
Conditions. Anonymity - if it applies. A link to the privacy policy or consent to the processing of personal data - if you collect it. Consent can be arranged with a checkbox on the same screen or separately.
Don't overload it. A long text with legal wording - few people read it. Keep it short, just the essentials.
Thank you screen - closing the session
Thank You Screen - the last survey screen after completion. It confirms that the answers were saved and thanks the respondent for participating. It may include a personalized result (in quizzes, NPS with a calculation), a link to the website, a promo code, or an invitation to share. For surveys without a result - just "Thank you, your answers have been received". The respondent isn't left wondering "did it work?".
In short: "thank you, everything is saved, that's all".
When the thank you screen differs
With logic jumps some respondents leave earlier - for example, they didn't pass screening. They get one text: "Thank you, unfortunately this survey isn't for you". Those who passed get another: "Thank you for your answers, here is your result" (if it's a quiz or NPS). In SurveyNinja you can set up several completion screens and route to the right one depending on the answers. More on this in the results screen settings.
For scored quizzes the thank you screen coincides with the results screen - it shows the score, the typology, a recommendation. The guide is here - correct answers and scoring.
In SurveyNinja: setting up the welcome and the finale
The welcome screen is the first screen in the survey structure. You edit the text and, if needed, add an image or logo. A "Start" button or a transition to the first question. The thank you screen is the last one. The text "Thank you", optionally a personalized result, a link. Design - fonts, colors - applies to both. Check it in the preview - how the beginning and the end look.
Answers are saved before the thank you screen is shown. Even if the respondent closes the page after the last question - the data has usually already been sent. But it's better to wait for the transition to the final screen - then it's certain.
"Start" button vs auto-transition
A welcome screen may require a "Start" click or move to the first question automatically. The button - the respondent consciously starts, marking the moment. Auto-transition - faster, but some may not manage to read it. For a short welcome (2-3 lines) auto-transition is fine. For a long one or one with consent to data processing - the button is safer: the respondent confirms the action.
Common mistakes
A welcome screen with no time estimate. "Answer the questions" - how many? Add "3-5 minutes" - it lowers anxiety and drop-offs.
A welcome screen that's too long. Three paragraphs about the company and the research goals - few will read to the end. One short goal, the time, the conditions.
A thank you screen with no confirmation. "Thank you" - but it's unclear whether the answers were saved. Add "Your answers have been received" - it closes the question.
No separate screen for screening. The respondent didn't pass - and sees the same thank you as those who did. A different text is better: "Unfortunately this survey isn't for you" vs "Thank you for participating".
Case: NPS with a personalized result
An NPS survey: "Rate the likelihood of recommending, 0-10", "What mainly influenced it?" - two questions. The thank you screen - "Thank you! You're a promoter (9-10)" with a brief explanation. Three screen variants: promoters, passives, detractors - different texts depending on the answer. Logic jumps lead to the right screen. The respondent gets feedback - higher engagement, less of a "they took my time and forgot me" feeling.
Connection with other elements
The welcome and the thank you screens frame the questions. Between them - screening, demographics, the main blocks. Logic jumps can lead to different thank you screens. For questionnaires and surveys both screens are standard - setup takes a minute, and the benefit for perception is substantial.
Redirect after the thank you screen
After the thank you screen you can redirect the respondent to an external URL - a company page, a landing page, an account. Useful for surveys in a funnel: filled it out - moved on to the offer. In SurveyNinja it is configured in the completion screen parameters. The redirect fires after a few seconds or on a click - depending on the settings. Don't forget that some will close the tab earlier - the main value of the thank you screen is that the answers have already been saved.
The welcome screen is the first screen with the goal and the time. The thank you screen is the final one, confirming the answers were saved. In SurveyNinja both are configured in the builder. With screening and quizzes - different screens for different paths.
